“They Say We Have to Leave” is a documentary film installation by Swiss-Armenian director Varsy Buchmann about the ethnic cleansing of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) in September 2023. In this multimedia installation, the collective trauma of displacement condenses into a narrative synesthesia about loss, uprooting, and the human cost of geopolitical conflict.
The installation interweaves past and present into a multi-layered narrative fabric, with the music of Armenian composer Arsen Babajanyan translating the projections into an emotional space.
More than a documentary, “They Say We Have to Leave” sees itself as a re-experiencing of a historical event; as an attempt to create a space for empathy, understanding, and support. An artistic testimony becomes an act of preserving memory and resisting forgetting.
